The week’s theme is announced in our blog ; music (including hymns and choir selections), readings, and the sermon reflect that theme. Other spoken elements are repeated weekly, including chalice lighting and extinguishing words and an invitation to light candles of joy or concern. Themes often come from the Soul Matters program, which is used by over 145 Unitarian Universalist congregations. In summer, lay-led chapel gatherings begin at 10:00 a.m. and last 30 minutes. This time together is informal, with music, candle lighting, readings on a theme, and discussion. Holidays & Traditions The September ingathering features a Water Celebration, mingling water collected during the summer. On Father’s Day we close with a Flower Communion Ceremony, exchanging blooms. Special services include Blessing of the Animals, Remembrance (All Souls’) Day, a December Holiday Pageant, Easter, and World Pride Day. Christmas Eve features “Lessons and Carols,” choir pieces, and candles. Our Renowned Music Program Lifecycle Celebrations at UUWH... As a faith community embracing multiple generations, we mark milestones through special rites of passage. Up Wedding Ceremonies Weddings Ceremonies are held in our Sanctuary or Chapel. Our ministers are glad to serve as marriage celebrants, for members or friends of the congregation, or for couples from the wider community. As a Welcoming Congregation, we joyously celebrate same-sex marriages. We also honor religious pluralism and approach interfaith marriages with sensitivity and respect. Our ministers happily join with co-officiants to share in solemnizing and celebrating the couple’s commitment. Child Dedications Child dedications usually take place during regular Sunday worship, with the congregation pledging support to the child’s family. The ritual involves a thorn-free rose dipped in water and a blessing. Families can request that the minister perform this rite of passage at any age, whether in infancy or later. Youth Passages Youth passages are available to teens when they graduate from high school (a “bridging ceremony”) and, when numbers permit, a Coming of Age program which culminates in a spoken Credo (statement of faith). Memorial Services During a tender time of mourning, our ministers work with family and friends to craft a Memorial Service or Celebration of Life that is a fitting tribute to the one who has died. These are often held in our Sanctuary or Chapel, but can also take place at a local funeral home or graveside. More Info on Space Rentals

- Visitor FAQs | UU Wellesley Hills
Read our Frequently Asked Questions and learn more about UUWH. Frequently Asked Questions General Logistics Groups and Events Governance What is UU Wellesley Hills? Our formal name is the Unitarian Universalist Society of Wellesley Hills. We are a self-governing faith community which has been gathering since 1871. We are a member congregation of the Unitarian Universalist Association.(uua.org) I’m new to Unitarian Universalism. What should I know? Many of our members were new to UU-ism when they arrived, having been raised in another faith or with no religious affiliation at all. UU-ism has no prescribed beliefs and draws on many wisdom sources, centering love and the inherent worth of every person. People often assume we are a Christian church, but UU theology considers Jesus a teacher, not part of a divine Trinity. What are the services like? A typical service lasts 60 minutes and includes music, readings, candle lighting, and a sermon. Plate collections are taken for not-for-profit organizations chosen by the Social Action Council. We also offer remote attendance, linked to on the homepage of this site.(https://www.uuwellesleyhills.org/home) What happens after the worship service? We leave the Sanctuary and move to our Parish Hall for Fellowship Hour. All are welcome to join for coffee, light refreshments, and conversation. An online Fellowship Hour is available for those who attend virtually. What are the worship spaces like? We have two beautiful worship spaces. Our Sanctuary combines modern and traditional features: a wall of windows, an organ loft, fixed pews, and a stained glass rose window . The smaller Chapel in the stone wing can be set up for a variety of intimate services and gatherings. What happens during the summer? While we pause most of our programming during the summer months, we still gather on most Sunday mornings. Lay-led Chapel services take place at 10:00am, with fellowship hour at 10:30am. The gatherings are an informal way to consider a theme and stay connected. Visitors often find them an easy way to meet people. We hold summer services between the July 4 and Labor Day weekends, typically seven per year. Is space on your campus available for rental? We have several spaces available for rent, including our large Sanctuary, more intimate Chapel, and a meeting room. For more information, visit the Rentals page of this website (/rentals)or contact our Treasurer.(mailto: Treasurer@uuwellesley.org) How can I get to know people? In addition to Sunday Fellowship hour, we have many opportunities to connect. You can join a discussion group or social action team, sing in the choir, volunteer for the spring rummage sale or a committee, attend potlucks or a circle supper, usher or host fellowship hour, attend “Caring Kids” programs. We are a busy and open community. What do you do to honor Indigenous People’s rights? UU Wellesley Hills formed an Indigenous Peoples’ Task Force in 2022, following the Town of Wellesley’s vote to honor Indigenous Peoples on what was formerly Columbus Day. The congregation voted unanimously in June 2022 to adopt a Land Acknowledgment (/land-acknowledgment)to recognize the ongoing erasure of Indigenous Peoples’ experience and culture into the present. The task force has promoted greater understanding of Indigenous concerns and contributions by leading worship services and community reads, publicizing educational opportunities, and sponsoring Sunday plate collections for Indigenous-led initiatives. What kind of help is available and how do I access help when I am struggling with a personal crisis? A team of Caring & Companioning volunteers extends the pastoral reach of our ministerial staff by offering help to congregants who might benefit from concrete assistance or emotional support. The Team can provide help to our members and friends with transportation, escort, and meals on an occasional basis. They also provide ongoing emotional support through phone calls and in-person visits. Team members regularly consult with ministerial staff to identify unmet needs and agree to respect confidentiality. If you would like to be connected with our Minister or Caring & Companioning Team, please contact the UU Wellesley Hills office,(mailto: info@uuwellesley.org) or email Rev. Mark Robel.(mail to: mrobel@uuwellesley.org)
