UU Wellesley Hills presents Music Sunday; May 17 at 10:30. Join the UUWH choir along with section leaders and pianists Pei-yeh Tsai and June Chen as they perform Johannes Brahms’ Leieslieder Walzer op 52.
Liebeslieder Walzer, op. 52 ---- Johannes Brahms
Johannes Brahms composed his opus 52, his first of two sets of Liebeslieder Waltzes for voices and 4-hands piano, in 1868-1869. Both musically and textually, these love-song waltzes draw on the folk idioms with which Brahms was enamored. At the time of composition, Brahms was producing first editions of a couple collections of Franz Schubert’s German dances, or Ländler – some of which you’ll hear as our prelude and postlude. The Ländler is a triple-meter folk dance widespread throughout Europe at the time; Schubert’s Ländler, in various keys and moods, were a direct influence on Brahms’ Liebeslieder waltzes.
